Mermaid Toast

Unicorns food? So last month. Rainbow-hued treats? Ugh, so last year. Avocado toast? Get lost. Mermaids, grab a fork (not the hairbrush kind) and step up to the table.
"Mermaid toast" is the latest craze taking over Instagram, and you don't need a fishtail to see why. Created by food stylist Adeline Waugh, the food uses blue-green algae powders mixed with almond-milk cream cheese to achieve the picturesque turquoise hues of the water. Waugh posted a picture of her latest creation to social media, admitting that she didn't set out to create a new food trend; she just happened to be inspired. Waugh also happens to be the brains behind "unicorn toast," proving she has some grade-A instincts to Internet-y foods.
"Not sure what to call this...but I'm thinking mermaid toast, as to continue the tradition of naming toast after mythical creatures," she writes on her Instagram @vibrantandpure.
Unfortunately, the dry-land is filled with haters, so before Waugh's toast could even take off, she had to defend her aquatic creation against Internet trolls criticizing the playful food for being too...fun? Clearly, Ursula is lurking.
"There are also so many people and articles hating on it, saying it's 'silly' and asking 'why?' Or 'who has time for that?!' Let me just put this out there: I am just having fun!" Waugh writes. "I am a food stylist, and I like to create beautiful things using food—I've never claimed to be starting a trend or a putting out a new recipe that is super practical—it's 100% impractical; I just like to play around in the kitchen and attempt to create something aesthetically pleasing and unique from time to time. Also, I don't know about you, but with everything going on in the world today, sometimes I just want to look at some colorful food."
