Frozen Yogurt Takes a Dark Turn With BLK 513

When initial news and photos of BLK 513 started appearing online, the brand’s design and innovative product looked as if it came from the batch of creameries sprouting abroad in Hong Kong and Singapore. All accolades must be given then to the young team behind it, who spent a year in development before finalizing BLK 513’s charcoal-infused Greek yogurt recipe, and the toppings and sauces that come with it.

The black color of their frozen yogurt might seem kitschy, but there’s more to it than just its aesthetics. The activated charcoal, taken from coconut, is infused to detoxify and cleanse, with a result healthier than any sugar-laden version around. The dark skim frozen treat is made from US premium Greek yogurt, which makes it thicker and creamier than anything on the market. Its thickness and bright spark of tartness is indulgent without the residual guilt.
While the yogurt is rightfully the star, the dressings are so well thought-out that they tend to share the limelight. There are crunchy bits, fruits, and syrups to choose from which can be piled on a cone (Php 170), or layered in a cup like a parfait (Php 185).

The team’s extensive travels have created genius combinations—Milk Jam that eats like a caramel-enhanced condensed milk, Salted Chocolate Gravy that is thick and slightly savory, as well as Peanut Butter Milk and Spiced Cookie Caramel, which make it hard to decide on just one. For crunch, White Chocolate Oldie is the kind of thing that reminds one of a rich, coated cookie, and the 1963 Chocolate Chip adds some old-school flair.

Done in small batches, and developed with careful thought, BLK 513 is the kind of refreshing, fine-tuned concept that represents what young entrepreneurs in Manila are doing with food. That and they might have singlehandedly revived the fro-yo.
